Visions of the city

Jo is 15 and lives in Parkville. When Jo's grandparents first came to Parkville 50 years ago, it was a quiet country village in the centre of the country. At that time, they had a small house on the edge of town, with some fields and the hills in the distance .

But Parkville was close to a big city, Arnwick with about 200,000 people. People from the countryside began to arrive in Arnwick to find jobs and have a better life. And of course they needed somewhere to live. However, it was expensive to live in the centre of Arnwick, so the city government decided to build flats around the edge of the city. And soon, Parkville became a suburb of Arnwick. It now has over a million people. Jo's family live in one of those new flats—there's no room for small houses any more.

The small local school in Parkville closed down five years ago. Jo goes to a school close to the Arnwick, with 2,000 pupils. No one knows all their names.

It takes Jo an hour to get to school, and this adds to the traffic and pollution. But it's not her fault. She liked her old school.

Arnwick needs larger hospitals and more doctors, better public transport and fewer private cars. There need to be more shops and offices. It also needs clean water and no rubbish in the streets. It's difficult to run a big city, and to protect people from crime. So it also needs more laws and more police, and taxes to pay for everything.

Well, what do you think of all this? Do you like the things which are happening in Parkville? In fact, “Visions of the city” is just a story. But does your town have the same problems as Arnwick?

One thing that British and Chinese cultures share is a love for fine tea. Today, when we think of Western tea culture, we often think of the English and beautiful china tea cups.

Afternoon tea.

People believe that an English lady, Anna, first introduced the idea of afternoon tea. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the English ate only two meals each day ─ breakfast and a heavy supper that would last for several hours in the evening, so people often got very hungry during the long wait between these two meals. To solve this problem, Anna came up with the clever idea of inviting some friends to join her for an afternoon meal between four and five o'clock. This meal included cakes and sandwiches, and tea was served to wash down the food. In order to make this afternoon meal important, fine china cups and plates, and silver teapots, knives, forks and spoons were used. Soon, afternoon tea parties became popular social occasions. Today, afternoon tea parties continue to play an important part in the social life in modern Britain.

Will you come for coffee?

Coffee also has an important role in British culture. People often use the words “Will you come for coffee?” to mean “Would you like to come to my home for a chat?” Normally, several different drinks such as tea, hot chocolate or a soft drink like orange juice will be served as well as coffee, and you'll be asked what you would like. However, you will not normally be offered wine at a “coffee” party.

63. Anna introduced the idea of drinking afternoon tea because she _____.

A. enjoyed chatting with her friends at home

B. loved fine tea and beautiful china tea cups

C. wanted to share nice food with her friends

D. found people felt hungry during the long wait between the two meals

64. What does “social occasions” mean in Chinese?

A. 集体婚礼 B. 社交活动

C. 社区表演 D. 公共场合

65. If someone says to you “Will you come for coffee?”, you _____.

A. will be offered coffee only

B. are asked what you would like to drink

C. will be asked to have a chat with him or her

D. are invited to take part in an afternoon tea party

I was quite sad this morning. A postman delivered(递送) the mail and I received five letters, a package and two postcards. But I didn't get the letter I was waiting for.

Later in the day, another postman delivered a special letter. I was very happy to receive it. I think you will understand why I want you to read the letter. This is the letter:

Dear Jim,

This is your first year at university and the first time you have been away from home on your birthday.

Your mother and I miss you very much. We often talk about how quickly you have grown up. We know you're very busy at university, but we're glad you write to us so often.

Both your mother and I are fine, and your younger brothers are in good health, too. They asked me to wish you a happy birthday for them.

I am sending some money as a gift for your birthday. You can buy whatever you want with it. Write to us whenever you can. We would like to see some photos of you and the university.

Love,

Dad
