Listen to the passage and tell whether the following statements are true or false.

The latest Harry Potter book may have a bad effect.

A doctor said that he had treated three children with headache caused by reading through the 870-page book.

The doctor called them Hogwarts headache, named after the wizard school that Harry attends.

The doctor wrote that the three children, aged 8 to 10, experienced a headache for two or three days. Each had spent many hours reading Harry Potter and the Order of the .

The doctor told his patients to give their eyes a rest. But Harry Potter was clearly too powerful. “The best way – that is, taking a break from reading – was turned down by two of the patients,” he said.

In each case, the headache went away only after the patient turned to the final page.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth book in the series, has nearly three times as many pages as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s stone, the first book, and J.K. Rowling still plans two more books.

“If those books become thicker, Hogwarts headaches may be popular in the years to come,” the doctor said. He warned that reading continuously for a long time was very harmful to eyes.

17. T 18. F 19. T 20. T 21. F 22. T 23. F

Listen to the dialogue and fill in the blanks.

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always making new words and we should be able to know where most words come from.

Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to from . They came from a big city in called . They did not speak good English, but they are good at making food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We came from .”One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of the beef like what the Germans eat. Hamburgers are sold in many countries around the world.

Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The reason may be found in any large English dictionary.
