We are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet?

Many people are surprised when they find that he Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks(网络)didn’t work well. If one computer in the networks broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system(系统)had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information(信息)could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working all the time.

At first, the Internet was only used by the government(政府), but, in the early 1970s, universities(大学), hospitals and banks(银行) were allowed(被允许) to use it too. However(然而), computers were still expensive and the Internet was difficult to become cheaper and easier to use. Scientists(科学家) had also developed(更新、发展)soft ware (软件) that made “surfing(浏览)” the Internet more convenient(方便).

Today it is easy to get on-line and it is said that millions of(成百万的) people use the internet every day. Sending(发送)e-mail is more and more popular among students.

Television has now come to nearly every family. It has become a very important part in people’s life, school children in the watch TV about twenty-five hours a week.

Soon people feel that television is good for children because it helps them learn about their country and the world. With the help of programmes of education(教育节目), children do better in school.

Other people feel that there are too many programmes about love and crime(罪恶)on TV, and that even programmes of education don’t help children a lot. Children simply(只是) watch too much television, so they don’t do a lot of other important things for their education. Children of three to six learn to speak their language and talk with people, when they are watching TV, they are only listening to the language, and they aren’t talking with anyone. When school children watch TV, they read less. Because of this, they don’t learn to read or write quickly at school.

All children learn by doing, and they need time to play to learn about the world. When they watch TV, they play less. They also have less time to talk with their parents and friends, and they have less time to have sports.

Recently(最近),fifteen families in Denver decided to stop watching TV for a month or more. At first it was difficult, but there were soon a lot of good changes. The children read, played, and exercised more, and the family became full off joy. But at the end off the month all the families began to watch TV as much as before. Not one family was able to give up television completely(完全地).
